Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that typically manifests in early childhood and is characterized by persistent challenges in social communication and interaction, along with restricted and repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities; symptoms and severity vary widely among individuals, and while some autistic people may need substantial daily support, others live independently and excel in certain domains. The causes of ASD remain multifactorial and incompletely understood, involving genetic and environmental factors, and early intervention is key to improving developmental outcomes. Co-occurring conditions such as epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and ADHD are common in autistic individuals, who may also experience sensory sensitivities and inflexible routines. Although diagnosis often occurs in early childhood, some individuals may not be identified until later in life; societal attitudes, access to therapy, and multidisciplinary support are crucial for enhancing the quality of life and inclusion for those with autism.
