Title : Suicidal Risk In Young Women With Bipolar Disorder

Abstract:

This study compared suicidal risk among young women with bipolar disorder and a non-clinical control group. This research addresses a clinically important issue, as bipolar disorder is consistently associated with a higher risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, particularly in young women. A quantitative comparative design was implemented on a sample of 200 women aged 18 to 25 years. The sample consisted of 100 participants with bipolar disorder and 100 non-clinical controls matched for key sociodemographic characteristics. Suicidal risk was assessed using standardized self-report measures, including the Suicidal Tendencies Scale developed by Koroleva. The statistical analysis indicated significant differences in suicidal risk between the two groups, with higher scores consistently observed among participants with bipolar disorder compared to the control group. Inferential testing supported the research hypothesis, confirming a clear between-group difference in suicidal vulnerability. These findings suggest that suicidal risk in bipolar disorder reflects a complex interaction of affective instability, impaired impulse control, and cognitive distortions associated with depressive and manic phases. Furthermore, psychosocial factors, particularly reduced perceived social support and heightened emotional reactivity, appear to contribute to increased vulnerability to suicidal ideation and behavior. The study underscores the importance of early identification of risk factors and the implementation of targeted preventive interventions aimed at reducing suicidal outcomes in young women with bipolar disorder and improving long-term mental health outcomes.
