Without a doubt, recent advances in nanotechnology are helping millions of people. But, how did this occur? Was your research part of these advancements? Have we innovated and commercialized enough? Are companies not paying attention to this wonderful research? Are Universities not doing enough to help you? What about government funding agencies? And, most importantly, are you in the right environment to innovate and commercialize your research?
In my own experience, above all else, it takes a supportive environment. Find the right community. I left the very negative, ultra-competitive Northeastern University in Boston (I have never seen such negative people in my 30-year academic career) over 5 years ago and I have never looked back. I found a truly supportive environment by forming my own companies and yes, finding supportive people who value me and my contributions at other Universities. Only then was I able to start numerous companies and commercialize my research into medical devices now in over 42,000 patients with no failures, only success!
So, I encourage everyone to find that right environment. Make that move. And attend the right conferences: the 3rd World Congress on Nanotechnology (Nano 2026) is such a conference where you will meet the right people and be inspired!
It will change your life once you make the commitment to surround yourself with positive people. I know, because I lived it.

The 19 conference themes encompass various aspects of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, offering a comprehensive platform for the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and the promotion of collaborative efforts. It is an honor, to welcome you on behalf of the Scientific Committee to the 3rd World Congress on Nanotechnology (Nano 2026), which will be held on October 29-30, 2026, in Berlin, Germany. The central theme of Nano 2026 is “Shaping the Future through Advanced Nanomaterials and Smart Innovations”. The healthcare paradigm advanced from empiric and phenomenological through evidence-based and person-centered medicine to personalized, preventive, predictive, participative precision medicine (P5M). Thereby, we must consider and understand the individual health status, conditions and genetic and genomic dispositions in personal social, occupational, environmental and behavioral context at any level from elementary particles up to society and universe. This requires the inclusion of actors from multiple domains with their own methodologies, languages, ontologies, education and skills as well as the subject of care. In this context, communication and cooperation must advance from data level to the knowledge level. Therefore, the highly dynamic, complex, context-aware, multi-disciplinary transformed healthcare ecosystem must be represented as a system of systems, using a system-theoretical, ontology-based, policy-driven approach. I have developed a related model and framework, which has been standardized in ISO 23903 Interoperability and Integration Reference Architecture. Because of its formal and foundational nature, the methodology is not restricted to health and social care, but has been successfully deployed already in many other domains. Welcoming you to Berlin, I’m sure that this conference will significantly contribute to your professional establishment and exchange, inspiring collaborative ideas and partnerships.
