Biography:

Dr. Lucian A. Lucia is a Professor at North Carolina State University, holding appointments in the Departments of Forest Biomaterials and Chemistry, and contributing to the Fiber & Polymer Science and Environmental Sciences programs. He leads the Laboratory of Soft Materials & Green Chemistry, which focuses on fundamental materials science and the green chemistry of renewable polymers. He earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Florida, where he studied photoinduced charge separation in Rhenium(I)-based organometallic systems as models for photosynthesis.

Dr. Lucia began his academic career at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology at Georgia Tech, investigating singlet oxygen interactions with lignin and cellulose. His recent research emphasizes the chemical modification of cellulose for biomedical applications.

At NCSU, he teaches courses including Forest Biomaterials Chemistry, Green Chemistry, and Paper & Society, and also instructs internationally at Qilu University of Technology in China. He is the co-founder and co-editor of BioResources, an open-access journal dedicated to the science and engineering of lignocellulosic materials. Dr. Lucia is a recognized leader in sustainable materials science, combining innovation with a commitment to renewable and environmentally friendly technologies.
