Background: Dentistry has advanced through successive waves of innovation — from Fauchard’s Le Chirurgien Dentiste in 1728, to anesthesia and radiography in the 19th century, to fluoridation, CAD/CAM, and clear aligners in the 20th. Each milestone improved accuracy, safety, and patient care. Artificial intelligence (AI) represents the next transformative leap, with the potential to reshape both clinical and administrative aspects of dentistry. Objectives: To evaluate how AI can address workforce shortages, standardize diagnostics, and enhance quality of care, while also generating new revenue opportunities for dental practices. Methods: A historical review of key milestones in dentistry was conducted to contextualize AI within the broader trajectory of technological innovation. Current applications of AI in diagnostics, workflow automation, and patient engagement were analyzed through published evidence and industry case examples. Results: AI-enabled diagnostics demonstrate improved accuracy in detecting caries, bone loss, and oral pathology, serving as a “second opinion” to support clinician decision-making and patient trust. Workflow automation — including scheduling, billing, and clinical note generation — reduces staffing strain and operational costs. Patient-focused applications, such as personalized treatment planning and visual simulations, increase case acceptance and revenue potential. Together, these applications mitigate staff shortages, elevate efficiency, and improve quality of care. Conclusion: AI in dentistry is not a distant prospect but a present reality. By integrating AI into diagnostics, administration, and patient care, practices can simultaneously address workforce challenges, raise standards of care, and secure financial sustainability
