Title : Beyond the Waiting Room: How Strategic Communications and Community Trust are Closing the Healthcare Visibility Gap for Underrepresented Communities

Abstract:

Access to healthcare has long been framed as a policy problem. But for millions of immigrants, racialized communities, and underrepresented patients navigating unfamiliar systems, it is first a visibility and trust problem. This presentation makes the case that strategic PR, intentional storytelling, and community-driven communications are not soft skills in healthcare. They are life-changing infrastructure. Drawing on real client work across healthcare organizations, senior care providers, and community health initiatives in Canada and the United States, this presentation introduces a trust-first communications framework specifically designed for healthcare entrepreneurs, HealthTech founders, and providers serving underrepresented populations. Key findings presented include how patient-centered storytelling directly impacts engagement and health-seeking behavior in immigrant and racialized communities, why BIPOC and newcomer patients consistently distrust healthcare systems that communicate at them rather than with them, and how healthcare organizations that invest in culturally competent PR consistently outperform those relying solely on clinical credibility and traditional advertising. This presentation also examines the growing intersection of government health policy including recent CMS reforms around Medicare access, prior authorization, and GLP-1 affordability and the communications gap that exists between policy change and community awareness particularly for seniors and newcomer populations who are least likely to receive timely, accessible information about their own care options. Attendees will leave with a practical, equity-informed communications framework they can apply to build trust, expand reach, and create meaningful visibility in communities that need it most
